What is mission?
I believe that mission is the heart-beat of God and the most challenging task for the people of God on this earth. The world is God’s mission field and God desires the world to know Him through mission.
Essentially, God is the founder of mission and mission carries out His very heart to the people. Thus, mission is presenting all about God and all about mission is for God. God’s ultimate goal for mission is to set free mankind from bondages of sin in order to bring them back to Him. The fundamental message of mission can be found in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” The gospel is the message of mission.
Jesus is the cornerstone of mission work on this earth. The entire plant of mission is building up upon what Jesus had done on Calvary. Exclusive of Jesus’ death and resurrection man alone can never embrace mission. Therefore, Jesus is the heart and gist of mission. The great commission of Jesus in Matthew 18:19-20 give a clear picture of mission objective for believers. The elemental interest and commitment of the Church must be the great commission of Jesus which is to do mission across the world. Jesus’ earthly ministry clearly stated that mission needs well equipped and faithful workers. Therefore, the churches play a major role in producing well equipped and faithful workers. On the other hand, mission is designed for every believer.
Finally, all the mission works will be concluding at the point of Jesus’ second coming. Therefore, the church and her people were requiring to do mission more than ever so.
